What are Estrogens and Progesterone?

Ovaries produce and release these two groups of sex hormones. These two hormones are hormones that are important for sexual and reproductive development in women. Essentially, Estrogen and Progesterone help regulate a woman's menstrual cycle and play a vital role in pregnancy.

Birth control pills are a synthetic form of the hormones Progesterone and Estrogen. By maintaining more consistent hormone levels, prevention of Ovulation is achievable. In addition, by avoiding a peak in Estrogen, the ovary won't receive the signal to release an egg.

Testosterone naturally decreases as men age, while Estrogen increases. However, Estrogens are not a concern unless levels are abnormally high.High levels could be a risk factor for conditions like diabetes and certain forms of cancer.

In addition, with increased estrogen levels, infertility can slow down sperm production, and chances of creating healthy sperm are lower.

In addition, increased Estrogen can cause more breast tissue to develop than average. High levels can lead to developing a condition called gynecomastia, which happens when breast fat tissue is abnormally high.

Erectile dysfunction has also been linked to higher estrogen levels, as it affects the balance of hormones to help get an erection and stay erect. Erectile dysfunction has also occurred if Testosterone is at abnormal lows levels.

Medication

Specific aromatase inhibitors are known to keep an enzyme known as aromatase from turning hormones called androgens into Estrogen.

Though they not the best choice as treatment, they can help reduce estrogen levels for patients if clinically indicated. You can take these as medications in the form of anastrozole (Arimidex) or exemestane (Aromasin).

Aromatase inhibitors are also available in natural forms, such as wild nettle root and grapeseed extract. But remember, you should discuss these natural options with your healthcare provider first.
